The dance of the brindabella roses

roses onlineI have been a special effects makeup artist for many years. I have drawn wounds on victims of war, alien faces, devils, demon brides and pretty much any kind of fantasy character you can think of. Every year I like to do a couple of charitable projects and this year I’ve chosen to help a small theatre production taking place at the Melbourne flower show. I will be transforming 12 young faces into brindabella roses so they can perform the dance of the roses and raise money for the children’s hospital. I’ve painted quite a few flowers in my time, roses, tulips, hyacinths and I even once was asked to turn a 6ft man into a bonsai tree. The key to getting floral effects is texture. It’s important to build up layers because after all a rose isn’t flat. I set to work designing templates to create twelve beautiful little brindabella roses. With all my work I like to start from the real deal, so I ordered some brindabella roses online. It didn’t require too many different colours which makes it slightly easier. The girls were all going to dress in green to represent the stems and their faces would become the flowers. The performance was scheduled for midday so I was going to arrive at 8am and get to work on my floral transformations. I have worked with kids on quite a few sets and they actually tend to be easier than adults when it comes to long makeup sessions. They get more excited about the end product so find it easier to wait it out. I was hoping to finish off the roses a little early so I would have time to browse the flower show. I always like seeing the exotic flower displays!
