Everyone was once ugly

beauty therapy coursePeople often say that the world these days is a harsh and cruel place, but I believe that in many ways things are getting better. Women have more rights than they used to, many western countries have made progress against racism and homophobia (although the battle is not yet won) and we have advancements in health technology that can prolong life and cure illness. Contrary to commonly voiced attitudes, I do not necessarily believe there is more violence and evil these days. I think these things have always been around.

Since starting my diploma of beauty therapy in Melbourne, I’ve also started to think that people’s appearances have changed a lot over the centuries. Do you ever see movies from the seventies and grimace at how bad people’s teeth were? They didn’t have the benefits of modern cosmetic dentistry (or toothbrushes, apparently). And have you ever gone to the art gallery and seen a portraits of so-called “beautiful” old queens? It really makes you wonder who actually wrote the history books. I know what you’re thinking, what about all of those glamorous starlets of the 30s and 40s? Well, even Rita Hayworth had electrolysis to remove her low hairline and Hollywood pretty much had the world’s greatest makeup artists at its disposal.

These days people seem to be more beautiful than ever and it’s all thanks to the wonders of cosmetics, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery. Think about it – most women wear makeup, and a huge percentage of them get beauty therapy or some other facial enhancements – can you imagine how everyone would look without it?!

I take a lot of pride in my
beauty course. Melbourne CBD would be a much more unsightly place if it wasn’t for the miracle of modern beauty therapy. You may think I’m being superficial but what’s wrong with a little beauty? The world is a much better place for it.
