Workmen, Just Like Us

folding platform stepsAs if working in IT wasn’t depressing enough with us slaving away in the basement, now our single window is completely blocked by aluminium work platforms. I know, they’re probably improving the building up above, or whatever, but we only just cleaned that window last week. It was covered in scum before, to the point where I always just thought it was a wall.

We have a week of beautiful (if sparse) sunlight before all the work platforms go up, and that’s the end of that. Well, nice while it lasted. Doesn’t help that the builders are storing all their stuff in the corridor outside, so to get to our office we have to run this weird gauntlet of toolboxes and ladders.

I swear, we get no appreciation down here. Last time there was a staff get-together, the boss got up at the front and thanked the people working in the café downstairs for helping everything tick over, and basically keeping the company afloat. No, not the IT people who actually keep the company afloat. Never mind us! We’ll just sit in the corner, with the only light in our lives being from a tiny window and the blinking of the servers.

I shouldn’t rage at the aluminium platform people. They’re workmen just like us; ignored by the important people in suits. I bet they’re fixing important things while everyone just walks by them with irritated glances because their folding platform steps are in the way. Never mind that they’re making sure that the roof doesn’t crashing down on their heads; no, they’re just not important enough. It’s all grunt work to these people.

We have more in common with them than I thought. It’s tough not being appreciated, but we show our mettle every day by continuing to do our jobs regardless. You know…maybe those folding platform steps out the window aren’t so bad. Maybe I should bring the working people a coffee. They’re pretty good from the café.
